The Seven Churches of the Apocalypse and the Island of Patmos – the place of exile of John the Theologian.
The Seven Churches of the Apocalypse are seven early Christian churches located in Asia Minor. They are also known as the Seven Churches of Asia (named after the Roman province, not the continent).
Seven churches are mentioned in the Book of Revelation:
What you see, write in a book and send it to the churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, and to Smyrna, and to Pergamum, and to Thyatira, and to Sardis, and to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.
(Rev. 1:11)
Today, the Seven Churches represent unique places, popular tourist attractions in the west of Asia Minor, located in or near the territory of modern cities of Turkey[1]:
- Hilt,
- Smyrna is now Izmir,
- Pergamum,
- Thyatira is near Akhisar,
- Sardis,
- Philadelphia is now Alaşehir,
- Laodicea is east of Denizli.
The Christian population in these cities is virtually non-existent following the population exchange under the Treaty of Lausanne (1923).
The seven golden candlesticks mentioned in Revelation signify the angels of the Seven Churches (Rev. 1:20).[2]
