Priene was a city of 6,000 people, built on the slopes of Mount Mycale. Ancient ruins are located near the town of Güllubahçe. Miletus, one of the ancient population centers of Ionia, was located on the sea coast in the classical period and had four ports. Didyma is 16 km from Miletus. A temple of Apollo was discovered here during excavations. The Hellenistic temple of Apollo was the third largest religious work of the Hellenic world, surpassed only by the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus and the Temple of Hera in Samos.
